Geography
Of Nisyros
Nisyros
is a small volcanic island in the Dodecanese group. It is on the
car ferry route through the Dodecanese, located south of Kos and
north of Rhodes. The island is well served by public transport in
the tourist season, but links during the winter are poor.

The
island was formed by a massive volcanic explosion, as it lies
on the boundary of the Europe African Plate. More recently,
further volcanic activity resulted in a caldera in the centre
of the island. The most active craters are now Stefanos
and Alexandros. The island still experiences minor
earth tremors. There are very occasional earthquakes, which cause
structural damage to the buildings in Mandraki, the islands
capital.
The
island is very green (for the Dodecanese) and a delight to visit
at any time of the year. It is paradise for the geologist, ornithologist,
botanist and people who love tradition and culture. It is also
a great place to dine in the ethic tavernas, search for inner
peace at the monasteries and even sunbathe on a few beaches. Above
all, it is the warmth and hospitality of the islanders that make
Nisyros such a special place for me.
